Ratio Makes a 34 Tooth GRX Chainring

BRR Analysis

Ratio Technology, based in Cumbria, UK, has launched new Shimano GRX-compatible chainrings in 38, 36, and 34-tooth options. This release addresses a long-standing gap in Shimano's official GRX gravel groupset, which previously offered only 40t and 42t chainrings. The new offerings, including a 9-45t cassette option, provide gravel riders with significantly lower gearing choices, particularly beneficial for steep climbs and loaded touring.

This development highlights a persistent oversight by Shimano in catering to the diverse needs of the gravel market. While GRX was designed for off-road, its standard gearing often proved insufficient for the most challenging terrain or for riders seeking a more comfortable cadence. Ratio, a company known for its drivetrain problem-solving, has once again stepped in to offer a practical solution, much as they have with their 1x conversions for SRAM and Campagnolo.

It appears Ratio understands what many gravel riders need better than the component giants themselves. Shimano's adherence to higher minimum chainring sizes left an obvious void, and Ratio has duly filled it.
