After nine months of teasing, Specialized finally launches new tubeless cotton tyres

BRR Analysis

Specialized has officially launched its new S-Works Turbo RapidAir 2BR and S-Works Turbo Cotton 2BR tubeless tyres, ending a nine-month period of anticipation following their initial tease at the 2023 Tour de France. These high-performance offerings, featuring a cotton casing and tubeless compatibility, are positioned as direct competitors to established premium race tyres, aiming to deliver superior rolling resistance and grip. The release marks a significant move for Specialized into the high-end tubeless road market.

This launch is particularly noteworthy given the cycling industry's ongoing, albeit sometimes reluctant, shift towards tubeless technology, even in professional racing. Specialized, a brand with considerable influence and a history of setting trends, has been relatively late to fully embrace tubeless for its premium road tyres, especially with a cotton casing. Their previous S-Works Turbo Cotton was a clincher, making this new tubeless iteration a significant evolution, reflecting both market demand and technological advancements in sealant and rim design.

After nearly a year of prototypes under their sponsored teams, Specialized has finally given the public what it knew was coming. One can only hope the performance lives up to the protracted hype, or it will be a rather expensive lesson in delayed gratification.
