Inside the Helmet Worn by Champions
BRR Analysis
Specialized has officially unveiled its new S-Works Evade 3 helmet, following months of covert testing by their sponsored elite riders, including Remco Evenepoel and Demi Vollering. The launch detailed significant aerodynamic improvements, enhanced ventilation, and a marginal weight reduction, claiming a 10-second saving over 40km at 45km/h compared to its predecessor. The helmet is now available to the public, priced at €300.
This release comes amidst a fiercely competitive market where marginal gains are paramount, particularly in time trials and sprint finishes. Specialized, a dominant force in performance cycling gear, is responding to innovations from competitors like Giro and Kask, all vying for the lucrative top-tier segment. The Evade series has been a staple in the peloton for years, with its predecessors adorning the heads of numerous Grand Tour winners and World Champions, making its evolution a closely watched event for both professional teams and amateur enthusiasts seeking an edge.
Another season, another aero helmet promising free speed. While the claimed gains are impressive, one wonders if the real innovation lies in the marketing department's ability to convince us we need another €300 lid.
