Kuwahara Grasshopper 1 is a Throwback 90s MTB

BRR Analysis
Japanese brand Kuwahara recently unveiled the Grasshopper 1, a new mountain bike designed with a distinct vintage aesthetic. Following their earlier release of the Elk Bar, a nod to the classic Ritchey Bullmoose, the Grasshopper 1 features a 26-inch wheel size and rim brakes, deliberately evoking the early 1990s era of mountain biking. This announcement, reported by The Radavist, signals a clear direction for the brand in embracing retro design.
This move by Kuwahara taps into a growing trend within the cycling industry: the resurgence of vintage-inspired components and complete bikes. With many riders seeking simpler, more durable designs or a dose of nostalgia, brands are increasingly looking to their heritage. For Kuwahara, a company with a rich history in BMX and early mountain biking, revisiting iconic designs like the Grasshopper offers a direct connection to its past while appealing to a segment of the market fatigued by ever-complex, high-tech offerings.
While some might question the practicality of rim brakes and 26-inch wheels in an era of hydraulic discs and larger diameters, Kuwahara clearly understands that sometimes, the ride is less about outright performance and more about the feeling.
