Giro: Narváez wins stage 4 as Ciccone rides into the maglia rosa
BRR Analysis
Jhonatan Narváez of INEOS Grenadiers claimed his third career Giro d'Italia stage victory on Tuesday's Stage 4, a 190km undulating route from Acqui Terme to Andora. The Ecuadorian out-sprinted Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla) from a reduced front group. Crucially, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) finished safely within the peloton, taking over the *maglia rosa* from Tadej Pogačar due to time bonuses, though both riders now sit on the same overall time.
This stage, featuring the Cat. 3 Colle del Melogno and a punchy finish, was always earmarked as a potential ambush for the pure sprinters, and so it proved. Narváez, a proven classics rider, capitalized on the challenging terrain, demonstrating the form that saw him win a similar stage in the 2020 Giro. Ciccone's ascent to the pink jersey, albeit on countback, marks a strategic move by Lidl-Trek, allowing them to carry the race's most visible garment without expending the energy typically required to defend it from a dominant GC leader like Pogačar.
Pogačar, ever the pragmatist, seems content to shed the jersey for now, allowing another team to bear the burden of control. A shrewd move, or simply an acknowledgement of the inevitable?
