'It was a bit dislocated' – Groenewegen provides update before Giro stage 2
BRR Analysis
Dylan Groenewegen, the Dutch sprinter for Jayco AlUla, confirmed he was "a bit dislocated" following the chaotic final kilometre pile-up during Stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia. While Groenewegen was cleared to start Stage 2, the crash claimed its first casualty, with Pinarello-Q36.5's Matteo Moschetti withdrawing due to a concussion. The incident saw most of the peloton held up, though thankfully, serious injuries were largely avoided among the remaining riders.
This early Giro chaos highlights the perennial tension between high-stakes sprint finishes and rider safety. Groenewegen, a veteran of numerous Grand Tour sprint victories, knows all too well the fine margins involved, having been at the centre of significant crashes in the past. Moschetti's concussion, however, serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks, particularly as the peloton navigates unfamiliar roads and the cumulative fatigue of a three-week race begins to set in.
Another Grand Tour, another first-week sprint finish marred by a crash. The cycling gods, it seems, demand their pound of flesh early.
