Shimano Gives us Two New GRX Chainring Sizes and Two Shorter Crank Arm Choices
BRR Analysis
Shimano has expanded its GRX gravel component line, introducing two new chainring sizes and two shorter crank arm options. Riders can now opt for 46-tooth and 48-tooth single chainrings, alongside the existing 40T and 42T. Additionally, crank arms are now available in 165mm and 170mm lengths, complementing the previous 172.5mm and 175mm offerings. This update provides gravel cyclists with greater customisation for gearing and bike fit.
This move by Shimano reflects the ongoing evolution of gravel cycling, where optimising cadence and fit for long distances and varied terrain is paramount. Shorter crank arms are increasingly favoured by riders seeking improved biomechanics, reduced knee strain, and potentially a more aggressive saddle position, while larger chainrings cater to those demanding higher top-end speed, particularly on flatter gravel sections or during competitive events. It’s a direct response to rider feedback and the diverse demands of the modern gravel landscape.
Ultimately, Shimano is simply acknowledging that gravel riders, much like road cyclists before them, appreciate options. It's less innovation, more adaptation to an increasingly nuanced market.
