Shimano GRX finally gets shorter cranks and bigger rings
BRR Analysis
Shimano has finally addressed a long-standing demand, announcing new GRX crankset options. The Japanese component giant has introduced shorter 160mm and 165mm crank arm lengths for its GRX groupset, alongside larger 48-31T and 50-34T chainring combinations. This expansion caters specifically to riders seeking improved biomechanics and wider gearing ranges, particularly for gravel and adventure cycling, with availability expected in the coming months.
This development is significant given the growing trend towards shorter cranks for enhanced power output and reduced knee strain, a movement Shimano has been notably slow to embrace in its gravel-specific GRX line until now. For years, riders have resorted to aftermarket solutions or road cranks to achieve these configurations, highlighting a gap in Shimano's offering. The introduction of larger chainrings also signals a nod to faster gravel courses and riders looking for higher top-end speed without sacrificing climbing capability.
While welcome, Shimano's measured pace in responding to clear market trends continues to be a hallmark. One might almost suspect they enjoy watching the aftermarket fill the void before eventually, and inevitably, providing their own solution.
