Shimano adds shorter crank and larger chainring options to its 12-speed GRX gravel groupset

BRR Analysis

Shimano has announced an expansion of its 12-speed GRX gravel groupset, introducing new crank length and chainring options. Riders can now specify shorter 165mm cranks, alongside the existing 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm lengths. Furthermore, the single-ring GRX setup gains a larger 42-tooth chainring, complementing the existing 38T and 40T, while the double-ring configuration adds a 48/31T option to its existing 46/30T. These additions aim to broaden the appeal and versatility of their dedicated gravel offering.

This move by Shimano directly addresses evolving trends and rider demands in the burgeoning gravel segment. Shorter cranks are increasingly favored by some for improved biomechanics and ground clearance, particularly on technical terrain, while larger chainrings cater to those seeking higher top-end speeds, perhaps for racing or less demanding routes. It’s a clear response to SRAM's broader range of gearing and crank options, indicating a competitive push to capture a larger share of the gravel market, which continues its rapid expansion.

Ultimately, Shimano is simply giving the market what it's been asking for. More options are rarely a bad thing, especially when the competition has already shown the way.
