Shimano’s new Saint pedals hint at DH groupset release

Shimano has quietly introduced a new iteration of its Saint SPD pedals, the PD-M829, which notably feature a larger platform and a revised spindle design. This release, spotted on Shimano's own website and subsequently reported by outlets like BikeRadar, is being interpreted by many as a strong indicator that a full Saint downhill groupset update is imminent. The previous Saint groupset, M820, has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 2012, making this pedal update particularly significant.

This development holds considerable weight given the Saint groupset's venerable status as Shimano's dedicated downhill offering. For over a decade, the M820 has been a benchmark for gravity riders, but its age is showing compared to advancements seen in other Shimano MTB ranges, like Deore XT and XTR, which have embraced 12-speed and Hyperglide+ technology. A full groupset refresh would bring Saint into line with modern drivetrain standards and potentially introduce new braking and shifting performance, crucial for the demanding world of downhill racing.
