The Brain Trust: Why Virginia Tech Ratings Are the Only Helmet Stats That Matter
BRR Analysis
Virginia Tech's Helmet Lab has become the gold standard for cycling helmet safety, going far beyond the basic pass/fail standards (CPSC in the US, CE EN1078 in Europe) to test for rotational forces — the primary cause of concussions in glancing-blow crashes.
Their STAR rating system runs 24 impact tests per helmet and produces a numerical score predicting concussion risk. Lower is better, and the difference between a 9.0 and a 12.0 matters even if both helmets carry a 5-star badge.
Three manufacturers consistently lead the VT leaderboard with distinct approaches: Specialized uses MIPS Air Node (a low-friction layer integrated into padding) to maintain 5-star safety without sacrificing airflow; Trek/Bontrager bets on WaveCel, a collapsible cellular structure that flexes and crumples to absorb energy; and Lazer carves KinetiCore crumple zones directly into the EPS foam, achieving 5-star ratings across their entire price range.
The most important takeaway from the VT data: price does not equal safety. The Pikio Labs Si Road Helmet recently topped the rankings, outperforming helmets twice its price. Stop buying for the logo. Start buying for the STAR score.
