American Cyclist Gets 3-Year Ban in Latest Doping Case Linked to Supplement
BRR Analysis
American cyclist Kyle Murphy has received a three-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for an anti-doping rule violation. The ban, effective from May 20, 2024, stems from a positive test for DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and its metabolites. Murphy, a former UCI Continental rider, accepted the sanction, which also includes the disqualification of results from the date of his positive sample collection.
This latest case underscores the persistent challenge of supplement contamination and athlete responsibility. DHEA, a prohibited anabolic agent, is readily available over-the-counter in the United States, often marketed for anti-aging or muscle-building purposes, yet remains firmly on WADA's Prohibited List. Murphy’s ban follows a well-trodden path of athletes falling afoul of regulations due to seemingly innocuous, yet banned, substances, highlighting the critical need for rigorous due diligence in supplement use.
While readily available, DHEA's status as a banned substance is unequivocal. Another day, another athlete learning the hard way that 'over-the-counter' doesn't equate to 'safe for sport.'
