Lauf's first eMTB keeps it simple and truly lightweight – it's all about the ride, not the power

Lauf, the Icelandic purveyor of unconventional suspension forks, has officially entered the eMTB market with its inaugural offering. Dubbed the "Laufey," this new electric mountain bike prioritises a lightweight design and natural ride feel over sheer motor power. With a stated focus on agility and trail dynamics, Lauf aims to carve a niche in the increasingly crowded e-bike segment, suggesting a departure from the high-torque, heavy-duty machines prevalent today.

This move by Lauf is particularly interesting given their established reputation for minimalist, leaf-spring suspension, which itself champions simplicity and low weight. The eMTB market has largely trended towards powerful motors and robust frames, often resulting in bikes weighing upwards of 20kg. Lauf's decision to buck this trend aligns with a growing, albeit smaller, segment of riders seeking lighter e-bikes that retain more of a traditional mountain bike's handling characteristics, often employing smaller batteries and less aggressive motors to achieve this.
