Paris-Nice Queen Stage further shortened to just 47km due to adverse weather
BRR Analysis
Race organisers for Paris-Nice have once again dramatically altered Stage 7, the designated Queen Stage, reducing its length to a mere 47 kilometres. Initially planned as a challenging 173km route culminating in Auron, adverse weather conditions, specifically heavy snow and freezing temperatures, forced ASO to first shorten it to 104km, then further to an unprecedented 47km, omitting the Col de la Couillole. This decision, made just hours before the scheduled start, means the peloton will now tackle only the final, albeit still difficult, ascent to the summit finish.
This latest truncation underscores a growing trend of major races battling unpredictable climate. While rider safety is paramount, repeated last-minute adjustments to key mountain stages inevitably dilute the sporting spectacle and impact race narratives. For a ‘Race to the Sun’ to be so consistently beset by snow and ice raises questions about calendar placement or route flexibility. It also places immense pressure on teams and riders, who prepare meticulously for specific stage profiles, only to have them fundamentally changed at the eleventh hour.
Ultimately, this Paris-Nice Queen Stage will be remembered less for its sporting drama and more for the organisational scramble, a stark reminder that even the "Race to the Sun" is not immune to nature's whims.
